About Anthony Phillips
Anthony Phillips, a native of Laguna Beach, California, has cultivated a rich and diverse career marked by academic excellence, dedicated service, and deep spiritual commitment. Valedictorian of Our Lady Queen of Angels High School Seminary, Anthony excelled in languages and theology, which laid a strong foundation for his future endeavors.
A devoted secular humanist, Anthony pursued a Bachelor’s degree in English, playing a pivotal role in establishing one of the first multimedia laboratories at a university in 1995. His academic journey continued with a Master’s degree (M.A.) in English, where his thesis delved into the complexities of Metatheatricality on the Elizabethan stage. Furthering his studies, he pursued a Ph.D. in English at the University of Missouri, focusing on Folklore and Oral Tradition, and is ABD (All But Dissertation). His scholarly contributions include presentations at esteemed academic conferences, such as the American Folklore Society, where he discussed topics like “Bob Marley and Habermasian Discursive Reggae Analysis: The Post-Primitivist Call for Tropological Conversion.”
Anthony’s quest for knowledge and service led him to law school at the University of Missouri, where he graduated in the top 25% of his class. His commitment to civil rights was evident during his tenure as President of the Mid-Missouri ACLU, advocating for marginalized voices. Alongside his legal career, Anthony taught English as an adjunct professor at various universities for many years.
Transitioning to a more pastoral role, Anthony invested over 2000 hours to become a Board Certified Clinical Psychodynamic Hospital Chaplain (BCCC) and Board Certified Pastoral Counselor (BCPC). His compassionate work as a hospital chaplain provided comfort to patients and families in need. He furthered his spiritual and academic pursuits by earning a Doctorate of Ministry (DMin), with a dissertation titled “Be, Know, Do: Proposing The STR Assessment Tool for a CPSP Hospital Clinical Chaplain: Toward a Theoretical Model of CPSP Rapid Response Clinical Case Formulation.”
Anthony is also a fully ordained Zen Buddhist monk/priest, teaching the practices of mindfulness and meditation to his students. His spiritual journey is accompanied by his beloved cat, Bussho, which means “Buddha Nature” in Japanese. In his leisure time, Anthony enjoys playing guitar and a bit of trumpet, adding a harmonious touch to his multifaceted life.
